From tables to grids
The earliest websites were built with tables, because that was the only layout tool available. Rows and columns held everything together, including things that were never meant to be a table.
CSS changes the rules
Once stylesheets separated content from presentation, design finally had room to breathe. Layouts stopped being a workaround and started being a decision.
Every era of web design has been shaped by whatever the browsers of the time would actually allow.
Flexbox and grid did not just make layouts easier, they made them honest. What you see in the code now looks a lot like what you see on screen.
